Thank you to Brenton Barrett and John Holland for their work on Council in 2007. They are not continuing in 2008 due to other commitments.

Thank you to Chelsea O’Connor and welcome Monica Patterson. Chelsea is leaving our admin position in the first week of February to continue with full time study and we wish her all the best. Monica Patterson commences the same week as Chelsea’s replacement, so she’ll now be taking your phone calls and emails.

SA/NT Region AGM on Tuesday 25 March

The AGM for the SA/NT Region will be held on Tuesday 25 March from 6pm at Printing House, Halifax Street.

Although the necessary legal formalities can be a bit dry, they will be brief! It is an ideal opportunity to support the association and network with industry colleagues afterwards over light refreshments.

We do need a quorum, so would appreciate all attending that can make it. More information will be provided in coming weeks.

Health and Safety Penalties Tripled in SA from 1 January 2008

Late last year the South Australian Government increased penalties for breaches of the health and safety legislation in South Australia by businesses and duty holders.

Maximum penalties for breaches have increased to $300,000 for a first offence and $600,000 for subsequent offences.

The legislation has also been changed to include a new provision of reckless endangerment which attracts penalties of up to $1.2 million for businesses and $400,000 for individuals. Persons found guilty under this provision can face imprisonment of up to 5 years. If you need advice on any of these or related issues, contact your local Printing Industries office on 1800 227 425.

Some Health and Safety Regulations Under Review in SA

Submissions have been made to the South Australian Government on the simplification of the whole regulatory framework.

This is to ensure it is in plain language, contains guidance notes, is easily understood and freely available for free to businesses from one location.

If you would like a copy contact Joseph.

Proposed Changes to WorkCover

The long awaited report with proposed changes to the WorkCover system in South Australia is apparently due to be released shortly.

It is hoped that real changes will be recommended and implemented to reduce the unfunded liability close to one billion dollars to realistic levels and reduce costs to member businesses and the community.

Changes to WorkChoices

With the change in the Federal Government, we expect significant changes in legislation covering member businesses.

It is anticipated the changes will effect unfair dismissals, remove Australian Workplace Agreements, modify minimum standards in “awards” and introduce “good faith bargaining” in relation to agreements.

We understand the first section of proposed changes is to be released in about 2 (two) weeks.

Member businesses will be informed of any changes as they occur. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
