A Comment from the General Manager - Countering the "Environmental Vandal" Perception

Peter Mansfield, General Manager South Australia & Northern Territory,

The recent actions by Mosman Council in Sydney NSW, issuing “No Junk Mail” stickers to all ratepayers, highlights the challenge the industry faces dealing with the perception that we are environmental vandals.

The Mosman Council action is likely to be copied by other Councils around the country as it represents an easy and inexpensive “green win” for them.

In my very short time in the industry to date, I am impressed by the numerous examples of environmentally friendly production, and yet a little perplexed why they are not promoted more. So, here’s a suggestion for every business to be proactive to educate clients and end-readers of good environmental practices where they are in place.

What about printing messages on the back of products, and/or on quotes, delivery dockets, wrapping or cartons? Think about putting signs in customer services areas, and including messages on websites and in advertising. Here’s some rough copy for you to work with:

(Client) and (Printer) care about protecting the environment. This quality product is produced on paper sourced from renewable forests and is printed using vegetable based inks. The production process uses solvent & water reducing technology. The CO2 emissions are offset through tree planing and all waste is recycled.

Please help the environment further by recycling this product when you have finished with it. Thank you.

Sending a message like this to as many recipients of printed product as possible would be a step to countering the prevailing public perception. Ensure however that any message you put out there is entirely accurate!

We are currently in discussion with government departments and private providers to devise a program to assist members to develop environmental management strategies. We aim to have a simple and cost effective program available early in 2008.

Peter Mansfield
General Manager South Australia & Northern Territory,

Australian Paper Develops Carbon Neutral Paper

Printing Industries member Australian Paper has developed a first for the Australian market - carbon neutral paper.

Accredited through the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO) Greenhouse Friendly Program, the ENVI range of carbon neutral papers offers an effective way for companies to continue their reduction of carbon emissions.

The carbon neutral range includes five grades and consists of papers suited for catalogues and books as well as general printing. The emissions from the energy used to make these papers will be offset with AGO approved abatement providers.

Further Reason to Improve Environmental Management - EPA to Adopt New Licensing Fee System

Industry will pay lower fees for environmentally friendly practices from next July following the establishment of a new licensing system by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).

The licensing system will be based on a 'user pays, polluter pays' principle, with licensees paying lower fees when they reduce their water and air emissions. The EPA's director of regulation and compliance, Tony Circelli, says the new system will be fairer than the current 10-year-old licensing system.

"There will be some activities that are potentially causing more risk, which will include higher fees," he said. "And there will be other activities which aren't, which previously paid higher fees, will now pay lower."

Never Entered the PICA Awards Before?

Regular entrants to the PICA Awards attest to the value to the business, whether they win an award or not.

If your business has never entered before, or hasn’t done so for a long time, why not decide now to put your best work forward for 2008? The entry fee is inexpensive and tax deductible.

An information session will be held in 2008 to assist first-timers (and regular entrants!) with tips on how to select and present work and what the judges are looking for.

Thinking About Selling Your Business?

From the moment you start to think about selling your business you need to shift your perspective and look at your business from the buyer’s point of view.

The true value of a business is what buyers will actually pay for it. Preparation for selling a business should commence about 2 to 3 years prior to placing it on the market. This allows the business owner to review all aspects of the business from a buyer’s perspective, to ensure that they are presenting an attractive proposition for purchase.

Contact Peter if you would like information on preparing your business for sale.
