Industry Overview
The Australian paper, printing, publishing and packaging industry continues to be a significant contributor to manufacturing industry and, indeed, to the development and growth of the economy generally. To show this contribution, Printing Industries has developed a ranking system using major performance indicators sourced from the manufacturing census and national accounts for the nine sectors of the Australian manufacturing industry.
The indicators used to rank the sectors of the manufacturing industry consist of:
The contributions made by each sector of manufacturing are shown in Table 1 of the report. On the basis of the ANZSIC definitions and using these indicators of activity, the ranking of manufacturing industries from largest to smallest during 2004-2005 (latest available manufacturing census data at the time of preparing the report) was:
Industry Growth The recent growth history of the industry is characterised by a degree of volatility when compared to the manufacturing industry and the Australian economy. Between 1998-1999 and 2005-06, the printing, publishing and recorded media industry registered six years of economic growth and two years of economic contraction (2004-2005 and 2005-2006).
